  1. Eat a Healthy, Balanced Diet

Since your liver helps break down sugars and fats, having too much saturated fat or sugars in your diet can overwhelm your liver, resulting in an excess of fat within the organ. This is known as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). If the excess fat causes the liver to become inflamed, this can lead to damaged liver cells and even liver scarring, both of which can limit or shut down liver function altogether.


  1. Moderate Your Alcohol Intake

As mentioned above, one primary function of your liver is filtering toxins from the food you eat out of your bloodstream. Your body recognizes alcohol as a toxin. If too much alcohol is consumed, your liver will use the majority of its energy for that filtering process. When this excess consumption happens too regularly, your liver can become overwhelmed and even damaged, which can result in Alcohol-Related Fatty Liver Disease (ALD). If there is no change in alcohol consumption after the onset of ALD, it may progress into very serious diseases like alcoholic hepatitis or even alcoholic cirrhosis.


  1. Be Aware Of Your Medications

Since your liver is responsible for monitoring the components of everything you ingest to look for harmful toxins and break down properties for your bloodstream, you must be very careful to not overwhelm your liver with too many harsh medications. Make sure to consult with your doctor before taking new medications to ensure they are safe given your medical history and current prescription use.

While it’s well-known that smoking has negative effects on the lungs, the bad habit can also have serious consequences on other vital organs, including the liver.

Not only that, but the smoke inhaled actually prevents your liver from receiving the oxygen it needs to function properly.
